The Best Version of Yourself Today: 5 Tips on How to Nail The Job Interview

“Can you tell me something about yourself?”,

We’ven been asked this question often since we were kids. And the older we get, the harder it is to answer. In a world that constantly tells us who we should be and how much we have to prove, how does one stand out from the rest?

We’ve all been there - the jitters of attending the initial job interview, the self-doubt if we have enough experience, if our certifications or training suffice for the lack of it, and the infinite worry if we can answer the interviewer’s questions to the best of our abilities. According to Statista, a leading global reports and statistics platform, there were around 2.2 million job applicants recorded in 2023. That meant there were roughly 2.2 million people who told job recruiters something about themselves. But how does one become remarkable?

At Offshore Business Processing, we asked one of our recruiters this question. According to her, the first way to stand out among job applicants is with a resume. The skills and experiences needed for the role must be outlined on the resume, as well as relevant achievements, academically and professionally, on the curriculum vitae (CV). While OBP requires Average English communication skills for the data entry roles, both oral and written, she expects Skilled and Professional communication skills for those applying for the support roles.

Offshore Business Processing boasts an employee culture that is unique, family-oriented, and values-driven. “We make sure that job applicants are committed to the roles they are applying for and that they are willing to be part of our culture onsite”, OBP Onboarding Associate emphasized what makes a job applicant stand out. “The willingness and commitment should be there, because skills can be learned,” she added.

The OBP Talent Acquisition Supervisor, agreed that while skills can be learned in training, the qualifications for the roles must be met because these are the requirements set by our clients such as educational attainment and relevant work experiences. And while having your qualifications and experiences outlined in your resume is important, making a good first impression on the interview is crucial.

Commuting and the intense traffic in Metro Manila can impact job applicants' ability to make a positive first impression. However, at Offshore Business Processing, we encourage job seekers to attend our virtual walk-in interviews every Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This makes the job application process easier by profiling our applicants virtually. To get better chances of getting hired, here are five tips on how to nail the virtual job interview via Zoom - if you’re new in the industry, or looking for better career opportunities:

Be on Time

The best way to make a good impression the first time is by showing up on time. This demonstrates discipline and responsibility, which are crucial to recruiters when they interview applicants. It is best to join the Zoom meeting link five minutes earlier than your scheduled time.

Demonstrate Positive Body Language

Even though you’re attending the interview virtually, recruiters will observe your posture and mannerisms. Observe proper posture, look directly at the camera as you speak, and most importantly, smile.

Avoid Distractions

Keep any distractions away from you during the virtual interview. Make sure that you are in a room that is well-lit and will encourage you to feel comfortable as you answer the recruiters’ questions. These include your phone, pets, children, and background noises from your family members and/or moving vehicles.

Use a Positive and Professional Tone

When speaking about your previous employers or bosses, speak only of good things about them. Remember, no matter what experiences you may have had with them, they helped you in one way or another. And in some ways, they helped you to be the person that you are today.

Be Prepared

Answer in a clear and concise manner. According to Mr. Tabeta, applicants should consider this before answering the questions. This can be demonstrated by focusing on answering the questions directly first. Reasons, examples, or other relevant and supporting statements can be given after giving your answer. This minimizes repetitive statements and will make the recruiter remember your answers better.

These tips may help you make a good first impression, but to make a lasting impression, you must not be afraid of being yourself. Each of the job applicants is unique, and so are you. There are skills and characteristics that others have and you don’t, and there are skills and characteristics that are uniquely yours. This doesn’t mean that one is better than the other - it just simply shows how much we can complement each other in spite of our differences. Recognizing this is the best way to be the best version of yourself today.
